TASN  Newsletter

Fall 2007

Barbara Duddy, President

Important announcement – In an effort to save time and money we will no longer be mailing Newsletters to you. This is the last copy of a Newsletter you will receive by the US Postal Service. Future Newsletters will be available to download on the TASN listserve and on the TASN website, www.tnschoolnurses.com. Please share this information with your co-workers and other members. We will let you know of future newsletters via the listserve.

I don’t know for sure when this school year started, it is a pure blurrrr, but what I do know is that we started the year off running and haven’t stopped yet. Here we are getting ready for pumpkins and turkeys and we are still trying to catch up on August. The year after year adage, “Things will surely slow down in a few weeks” does not seem to hold true this year, “To date there is no sign of slowing down and I am apologizing for getting this newsletter out so late…..

Summer, it seems so long ago and…….

The 39th NASN Conference held in Nashville is over and it was a huge success and an experience to be long remembered. TASN can boast of being the only affiliate to host a conference with the highest attendance in NASN history. TASN can also boast of being the only Affiliate to have the Governor and Commissioner of Heath welcome everyone to the conference at the opening session.

Thank you, Governor Phil Bredesen and Commissioner of Health, Susan Cooper.

There were over 1500 School Nurses from all over the country and overseas in Nashville and that’s amazing! The truly amazing thing is that there were over 160 TASN members in attendance. Tennessee school nurses were easily identifiable since we were all decked out in our Minnie Pearl hats. Folks loved the hat idea and the theme was carried thru for the table decorations at the Banquet. Even the men who won “hats” at the Banquet loved wearing them.

TASN received a letter from Donna Mazyck, President, NASN thanking us for hosting the conference and helping to make the conference such a huge success.

Many, Many Thanks…………..

We are proud to be part of such a successful conference and I would like to thank everyone who contributed their, time, energy and efforts into making this such a success. It took a lot of hard work on the part of many folks.

I would like to thank the TASN Officers for doing an outstanding job working with NASN doing the behind the scenes work. A huge “Thank You” to the planning committees, all committee chairs and members for being so visible and active. A special thank you to Carol Burnett and Karen Pickett along with the dozens of other members who spent many hours at the “table” selling hats, bags and raffle tickets for the baskets and the unique handmade “School Nurse Quilt” donated by Carol Burnett’s sister.

We realized a profit from the sale of the “Hats Off” bags, shirts, and baskets and of course the wonderful Quilt. TASN would also like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to our sister Affiliates; Ohio, Alaska, Alabama, for the donating baskets filled with wonderful gifts unique to their state and the School Health Company, for their support as a corporate basket donor.

School Health Corporation also hosted a morning walk, provided T shirts, and continues to be a very strong supporter of school nurses and school health.

Purity Dairy generously donated water for the Endowment Dinner Hoe-Down.

Attending a national conference is truly is a remarkable experience and one that I personally hope Tennessee school nurses will want to experience again and again.

TASN Business

·         Business meeting -...June 29, 2007 from 2-3 PM in the Hermitage B room Opryland

As you know we opted to cancel the TASN 2007 Fall Conference this year to boost attendance at the national. According to the By Laws, we had to conduct a business meeting this year which we did in Nashville. The minutes of the meeting are posted on the web site to download.

In Summary:

Induction of New Officers

Lisa Nistler’s nomination was accepted, approved by the members, and she was inducted as Treasurer. This position will start now instead of in the fall, since Karen Pickett relocated out of state. Thanks to Karen for being a super treasurer. We wish her well in Florida! Members approved nomination of Marjorie Hogan as President Elect.

Director to NASN, Betsy Jernigan, will finish her tenure as Director in October 2008. To faciliate a smooth transition to the Director Responsibilities, TASN is providing support to the incoming Director. The incoming director will work with the present Director until her term ends at the TASN 2008 Fall Conference when the new Director takes office.

Nominations:

We are seeking Nominations for the Director Position. Please email your nominations to Susan Spainhour at  psd.spain@att.net . Ballots will be forthcoming as well as a deadline for submitting the Ballots. Please review the By Laws for nominee criteria

TASN Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan was discussed at the business meeting and there is a section that does not contain action strategies. We asked for formation of a task force to work on completion of the plan.

I’m listing the members as a reminder and refresher. Members include: Kathie Johnston (Chair), Liz Graves, Chris Taylor, Claudia Simms, Margaret Harris, Barbara Heier, Lisa Dunivan, Connie Robles, Marjorie Hogan, Barbara Duddy, and Patti Scott.

Membership:

Increasing membership is an ongoing goal for this organization, there are approximately 1600 school nurses employed in Tennessee and approximately 250 of these school nurses are members of TASN.

If each of us recruit one new member, our membership can easily double or more than double in a very short time.. This is not a one-size-fits-all membership - there are several types of memberships available…

·        Active

·        Retired

·        Student

·        Corporate/Business/Professional Organization

Refer to the NASN web site and our By Laws that are posted on our web site for an explanation of the membership structure.

TASN Committees - Revitalizing Standing Committees remains a priority ……..

We need members to serve on committees listed in the BY Laws

I have listed the committees and, in a nutshell, outlined the duties and responsibilities of each of them.

Please review the list and volunteer to work on one or more of these committees that best meets your interest.  We need your help!

The President or the Executive committee may appoint committee members. However, it is always better to have folks volunteer to serve on a committee. Each committee member will serve a 2 year term.

Committees should strive for 6 members who represent the grand Tennessee divisions and both urban and rural areas. One of the members of the committee is also an Executive Board member who serves as a non-voting liaison.

  • Organization and Finance Committee,

Assists the executive committee in preparing the annual budget.

Assists the executive committee in preparing and reviewing the an annual report to the membership

Makes recommendations on dues structures and fundraising.

Advises on creation of task forces.

Encourages and supports regional and local chapter activities.

Executive committee liaison: Treasurer

  • Nominating Committee

Seeks qualified candidates for office

Reports recommended slates to the executive committee prior to the Annual meeting.

Assists committees in recruiting membership within the geographic and rural/urban representation.

Executive committee liaison: Past President.

  • Conference Continuing Education Committee:

Plans educational program and CEU credits for the annual conference.

Serves as resource for persons planning in-service activities for nurses or other school health team members at the district level.

Maintains and updates TASN website with appropriate CE offerings.

Executive committee liaison: President-elect and secretary.

  • Legislative Committee:

Reviews and informs members of proposed legislation pertinent to the interest of TASN.

The Committee shall disseminate information concerning legislation affecting the delivery of school health services.

The Committee shall initiate and support legislation that will strengthen the mission and goals of TASN.

I am still seeking TASN County representation and asking for a volunteer from each county in addition to having representation from the private and parochial schools in each of the counties. We are only as strong as we are together. I would like to think that by establishing county representation we will improve communication and provide a more connected membership.

we would love to add your name to this prestigious list…

A new State Asthma Task Force was organized in the late spring. It has been named STAT . We will be sending information from the .Task Force from time to time on the listserve and posting STAT information to our web site.

There are many challenges and issues that exist as barriers to us as we strive to deliver quality school health services. No matter where we are, in what part of the country or county; School Health Programs and School Nurses everywhere are facing the same challenges and issues in their programs as we are.

We are all suffering from lack of understanding of the importance of school heath programs overall, school health nursing as a specialty practice, the lack of understanding that delegation of health services to non nurses is not the answer to providing quality health care and that legislating how we will manage the chronic disease of the year is not in the best interest of the children of this state.

If we are to get the support we need to address these issues, we need to reach out to those who can and will help us advocate for:

  • -the recommended nurse to student ratio,
  • State standards,
  • adequate funding and appropriate staffing
  • not delegating health services to non nurses
  •  putting an end to having our lawmakers waste good time and money legislating the “Chronic Disease of the Year”

Becoming a member of your state organization, renewing your membership, and recruiting (each member recruiting at least one new member a year) will help us achieve our goal of doubling our membership. We will become more visible and have a stronger voice. With your support, we can realize our goal of one nurse in every school or meet the recommended ratio of 1:750. Schools need highly skilled and adequately compensated professional school nurses to ensure that children are healthy and ready to learn.
